Custom Poster Printing in Papua New Guinea

When we first met Professor Polly Wiessner it was to discuss being commissioned to undertake the printing for The ENGA Taka Anda: Tradition and Transition Centre Project, Papua New Guinea. This was an extremely exciting prospect and one in which has proved to be a very rewarding experience. The project started,in 2009 and it has been a extreme pleasure to work with Polly and her designers ever since.

Polly Wiessner

Polly Wiessner - Credentials - Ph.D. U Michigan 1977; Prof. Areas of Specialization: Hunter-gatherers, cultural systems of sharing and exchange, ethnoarchaeology, ethology ecology, warfare, oral history; Highland Papua New Guinea, southern Africa.

This is a labour of love, Polly has spent 25yrs researching the ENGA culture and history. Her vision, along with collegue Akii Tuma, is to return her findings to the 300,000 strong people of ENGA. The ENGA Taka Anda house of knowledge was opened in 2009 for the sole purpose of preserving the ENGA culture and identity. Historical traditions collected between 1986 and 1996 by Polly Wiessner, Akii Tumu and a team of Enga researchers revealed the rise of highly competitive ceremonial exchange networks involving some 40,000 people and thousands of pigs and valuables during this period. Significant developments in ritual and warfare took place simultaneously.

In the last decade, they have gone on to study current cultural change concentrating on two topics. The first is what happens when marriage that forms links between clans and weaves the fabric of Enga society breaks down as a result of a boom in the cash economy, cell phone mediated affairs and high mobility. The second is the transformation of traditional tribal fighting after the adoption of gun and high-powered weapons around 1990. In the past two decades, youths wielding firearms have upset the balance of power between young and old men resulting in over 500 tribal highly destructive wars in a population of some 300,000 Enga. They are currently following the strategies used by elders to regain control through adapting 'customary law' to a changing world in such a way as to settle conflicts before they escalate.

PosterBox's small part in this project was to print custom size posters prints that are displayed at the centre. The prints range from 5mtr long self adhesive vinyl wall displays, to multi-panel prints mounted to 5mm black sintra and prints back mounted to 3mm clear acrylic.

  • The Great Wars
    Multi Panel Prints
These massive prints were printed in 3 sections on self adhesive vinyl and mounted to 5mm black sintra. Some of thes prints span over 5 metres. An effective way to print and display such a large piece.
  • Inside Centre
    'Wave Prints'
These prints were printed on self adhesive vinyl and mounted directly to the panels. The prints were laminated with a sand finish laminate which protects the print and reduces glare while still maintaining the vibrant colours of the print. The vinyl was cut to shape manually.
  • Offical Opening
  • Mounted Prints
    Mounted on to perspex
These prints were back mounted onto 5mm clear perspex. Back mounting has severval advantages, firstly the prints have depth, an optical illusion the clear perspex creates and secondly longevity. The prints cannot be touched!
  • Proud
    Imagery and Text
One of the many quality challenges of both the graphic design team and PosterBox was ensuring the old photographs printed at the highest possible quality.
  • Mounting
    Mounting gives depth
If you look closely you can see this wall is made up of several different prints. The 'wave' is mounted directly to the back wall. The header, Warfare, is mounted on 5mm black sintra and placed ontop the header. The square panels are all mounted on perspex.
